Linus Fung



FUNG YAT SHAN holds a Master of Music from Royal Northern College of Music majoring in clarinet performance under the tutorship of Mr. John Bradbury, Ms. Lynsey Marsh and Mr. Nicholas Cox with an entrance scholarship. FUNG graduated from the music department of Chinese University of Hong Kong (BA), majoring in clarinet and minoring in voice, under the tutorships of Mr. Martin Choy (RCM) and Alan Tsang (RCM) respectively.

Commissioned by RNCM and dedicated by the composer, FUNG premièred composer Alexander Proudlock’s solo clarinet piece “Jack in the Box” in the Robert Saxton Festival in November 2015 (“That was an excellent excellent performance.” – Mr. Robert Saxton). FUNG also UK premiered Penderecki’s Symphony No.7 on the Bass Clarinet as a member of the RNCM Symphony Orchestra. He also premiered Prof. David Blake’s opera “Icarus” during summer 2016, UK Premiered Penderecki’s Symphony No.7 in 2015 and works by local composers with the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble and CUHK New Music Ensemble in 2014.

As an orchestral player, FUNG auditioned into the Halle Symphony Orchestra’s and BBC Philharmonic’s Professional Experience Scheme in year 2015 and 2016 respectively. He has performed, recorded and broadcasted with the BBC Philharmonic recently in the New Music North West Festival. FUNG was also principal clarinet in Hong Kong Philharmonics’ first “Share The Stage” programme conducted by the late Lorin Maazel. He is a member of Piccadilly Symphony Orchestra and Northern Sinfonia. During his Bachelor years, he played as the principal clarinettist of Chung Chi Orchestra, bass clarinettist of Chung Chi Wind Orchestra and clarinetist of the Pro Arte Orchestra of Hong Kong.

As a keen chamber musician, FUNG won the RNCM Brosky (Cross School Chamber Music) Prize 2016 and was a finalist of the 6th International Competition ‘Giovanni Musicisti – Città di Treviso’ (chamber music), 2014 with his clarinet trio. He also performed two chamber recitals in Die Konzertisten’s Rising Star Series in 2014 summer and recently the “Clarinet Trio Night” concert for Rhythmic Hong Kong in Jan 2016.

As a clarinet student, FUNG has played in masterclasses from renowned clarinettists including Reiner Wehle, Radovan Cavallin, Julien Herve, Lorenzo Iosco, Philippe Cuper, Mark Simpson, Jane Booth and David Campbell.

Alongside his clarinet playing, he always carries his music through his voice too.As an active chorister, He is a member of the choirs Die Konzertisten, Chung Chi Choir, Aqua Voice and a guest singer of the Singchronizers. Appearing in Hong Kong Arts Festival 2013, Hong Kong Counterpoint Festival 2012 and 2013, Hong Kong Sinfonietta Season Opener 12-13 and numerous concerts, FUNG has performed masterpieces including Bach’s Motets, Beethoven Symphony no.9 and Mass in C, Handel’s Isreal in Egypt, Requiems of Brahms, Cherubini, Faure, Mozart, Verdi and Karl Jenkins (conducted by the composer), Bernstein’s Chichester psalms, etc. He has conducted Aqua Voice in their annual concerts, after learning choral conducting with Felix Yeung (MMus, Choral Conducting, RAM) and Sanders Lau (MMus, Choral Conducting, Eastman).

As an experienced A cappella singer, he was a bass and arranger of the all-male contemporary A cappella team “Set Tone Men” before studying in RNCM. STM has won the silver prize in Taiwan International A Cappella Festival, Gold Prize in Hong Kong International A Cappella Festival 2013 and Champion in Hong Kong A Cappella Contest (Open Class) 2012. STM performed as guest in numerous occassions, including RTHK “Music In the Park” 2012 and Koshu A Cappella Summit in Japan. FUNG also served as the A cappella tutor of Tsang Shiu Tim Secondary School.

FUNG was awarded the Chung Chi College Matriculation Scholarship for Outstanding Extra-curricular Performance 2011 and the Talent Development Scholarship 12-13 from the HKSAR government for his musical acheivements.
