Ka Lap Wong graduated from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama under the tutelage of Stefan Popov. During his time in London, he had participated in many concerts with pianists including John York, Alan Brown, as well as his quartet formed in London, the Lysander Quartet. As a soloist, Ka Lap has performed the Prokofiev Sinfonia Concertante in London and the Haydn Cello Concerto in D in Hong Kong
Although Ka Lap began his cello studies in Hong Kong with Monica Su, he was unable to study constantly due to injuries and local exams. However, with the help of Artem Konstantinov and the HK Cellist Society, he gained recognition for his ability, coming to the attention of such musicians as cellist Vladimir Perlin and composer Robert Saxton, who praised Ka Lap as “Big Talent” and “understanding the music very well” respectively.
During his time studying in the UK, Ka Lap has developed a love of arranging pieces for the cello, most notably the violin partitas by J.S. Bach. He also enjoys playing and sharing lesser-known pieces of the cello repertoire. He specialises in chamber music, which he studied with Evan Rothstein, Matthew Jones and Andrew Watkinson.
Ka Lap has become a freelance cellist in the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, participating in the recent Beethoven Cycle project as well as the Wagner Ring Cycle project. He has also enjoyed teaching and showing the importance of chamber music and improvisation to young string musicians.
His most recent solo performances include playing the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No.1 with the Gustav Mahler Orchestra and a Asia Debut of his arrangement of the Bach’s Chaconne in D minor.
